You are greeted by Scorpion who warns of your failure and then the game gives you control of Sub-Zero as you start your mission. Here on the Nintendo 64 (likely due to cartridge limitations) the story is told with still image snapshots from the PlayStation cutscenes and written text only.Īfter the story introduction, you are dropped into the first stage and tasked with stealing a map from your rival clan’s temple.

In the PlayStation version all story content is told via fully animated cinematics with full voice acting. I do like how the game attempts to bridge familiar characters from the original trilogy with the new characters designed for MK4 and expand the lore. The story itself is pretty straightforward and while not groundbreaking it is well done for its time. Eventually Sub-Zero discovers he’s been deceived by Quan Chi and under order from Raiden has to cross into the NetherRealm to recover the amulet that could bring power back to a banished Elder God named Shinnok and cause destruction of the Earth Realm. This leads to entering the Temple Of Elements and defeating various bosses across several stages while recovering an amulet of personal value to the sorcerer. Mortal Kombat Mythologies is a prequel to the original fighting game, revolving around Sub-Zero and his quest to retrieve various artifacts for a sorcerer named Quan Chi. I think if anything its clearer now that no matter how great the idea was, the execution was terrible and it’s easy to see why only a few other attempts at spin-off games were taken. I’ve recently become interested in revisiting the early Mortal Kombat games and figured I would start here as it’s one of the few games in the franchise I never completed or put significant time into. I never got around to finishing the game and soon my attention had moved onto MK4 and MK Gold on the Dreamcast. I don’t recall particularly enjoying the game nor do I remember it being explicitly terrible, more forgettable than anything else and far too difficult to be worth slogging through. I played through the game partially on the Nintendo 64 back in 1997 but never made it past the second stage.

Given my high interest in the series and specifically its lore and characters, this always seemed like a great idea. In an effort to keep interest in the series high until the release of MK4, Midway decided to try a spinoff game that explores the backstory and lore of one of the series most popular characters: Sub-Zero. Heading into 1997 there was a fever pitch of excitement for the next mainline Mortal Kombat this time heading into full 3D. While most fans will argue various levels of quality, all 3 games in the original trilogy were and still remain highly regarded. The obsession only grew with the fantastic sequel and in my opinion, underappreciated third entry including its Ultimate version and all the various home console ports. Countless rentals of the Genesis version led to hours of scouring magazines for any cheat codes or information on the game’s secrets. While I did play the original arcade release, it was the hugely anticipated home console ports on “Mortal Monday” that made me a fan. Not only leading to even more popular sequels but also an animated series, live action film and controversy regarding the game’s violence. From first hearing all my friends talking about the arcade version to the unprecedented coverage in both game publications and mainstream media, it was everywhere.
